MACEDONIA BURNING? American-Macedonian civil rights leader speaks out

Macedonia Burning - American Macedonian Civil Rights Leader George Atanasoski speaks out against the attacks on native ethnic Macedonians.  no holds barred interview -(English and Macedonian version)... on Team Uzunov blog...

George Atanasoski is a successful businessman in the United States, running a hi tech company Microflex which lists NASA, the US space program governing body, amongst many as of its high profile clients. Atanasoski also owns a Macedonian television station and magazine called Makedonsko Since (Macedonian Sun) as well as being the leader of the Macedonian Alliance. He has been a tireless worker in strengthening US-Macedonian relations. In 1994 he made an unsuccessful tilt at the Macedonian Presidency against popular incumbent Kiro Gligorov (1991-99).

English version:

Question 1:  You’ve come out strongly opposed to name “negotiations” with Greece. Why is that?

George Atanasoski: This standpoint of mine isn’t new. Since the beginning of the 1990s, I have publicly called for the termination of negotiations with Greece. The passing of time has not change my view, but confirmed my point of view. What did Macedonia gain from the negotiations? Nothing but enormous humiliation. A past generation of politicians changed the Constitution, the flag, removed the Kutlesh sun, accepted the embarrassing reference FYROM, and signed an Interim Accord [in 1995]. Greece, headed by [Prime Minister] Karamanlis and [Foreign Minister] Bakoyannis, going against the USA’s interests, vetoed the invite for our membership into the NATO Alliance at the Bucharest Summit in 2008. Now, 10 years later, the Macedonian government is trying to appease [Greek Prime Minister] Tsipras and [Foreign Minister] Kotzias with a servile foreign policy.

[Macedonian Prime Minister] Zaev and [Foreign Minister] Dimitrov (pictured above with Kotzias) renamed the highway and the airport, publicly accepted a geographic qualifier to be part of the name, distanced themselves from modern Macedonians’ ancient roots. The Greek radicals will not budge an inch from their positions. Look at the public sentiment in Greece. The results are devastating. A huge number of Greeks, about 70 percent, are opposing the option of the term Macedonia even being part of the name solution. The opposition party New Democracy headed by Bakoyannis’ brother, Mitsotakis, who has a highly radical attitude towards Macedonia, is leading Syriza in all polls and is an almost certain winner in the forthcoming elections. Especially that almost all State representatives and political officials in Greece are unanimous in the blackmail towards the Macedonian people, either you will accept a new name and a new identity as a Constitutional solution or no EU and NATO--humiliation for nothing.

Therefore, instead of falling for the tricks of Athens, now we need shock diplomacy. Until the implementation of the verdict of the Hague Tribunal that condemned Greece for violation of the Interim Accord is secured, through which Macedonia would immediately receive an invitation to join NATO, we should not have any further negotiations. Negotiations are pointless. No politician in Greece has any legitimacy to propose a new bilateral international treaty when they fail to comply with the valid Interim Accord. International justice must apply equally to all. And Macedonian politicians must understand that none of them, not any party or government coalition, is above the Macedonian people. The only sovereign ruler of the name and identity is the Macedonian people who will never forgive high treason or selling out national interests. We are not after something that is not ours, we are only protecting our universal democratic right of self-determination. We were, are and will remain Macedonia, because generations of Macedonians have given their lives for this country.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Question 2: Are you alarmed by the inroads that Bulgaria has made into Macedonia in undermining its distinct identity? Who do you blame for this?

George Atanasoski: I do not overlook the fact that Bulgaria recognised Macedonia under the Constitutional name and therefore I have always advocated good neighbourly relations, but on a reciprocal basis. Macedonia and the Macedonian people must not be humiliated or be the victims of a one man’s dreams for San Stefano Bulgaria. The government of [Bulgarian Prime Minister] Boyko Borissov felt the moment of weakness of incumbent Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, who does not hide and is publicly showing fondness for Bulgaria, even openly nourishing the Bulgarian thesis that “we are one people in two countries.”

In addition to this is the request of some of the Macedonian Orthodox Church leaders, namely the Strumica Bishop Naum--who has close relations with the Zaev family--that the Bulgarian Orthodox Church should become a “mother-church” of the Macedonian Orthodox Church. This is absurd because our Ohrid Archbishopric is one of the oldest Orthodox churches and we do not need such an approach. But this is clear indication that some of the so-called Bulgarophile structures in Macedonia have awoken. It is not by chance that a new party led by and consisting of Macedonians with Bulgarian passports has been formed and is publicly supported by Bulgarian MEPs [Members of the European Parliament] who are the biggest deniers of Macedonian identity. The Bulgarian Government, headed by Boyko Borisov and Krassimir Karakachanov (pictured below), insisted on signing the Treaty of Good Neighbourly Relations, imposing it as a condition for our Euro-Atlantic integration. Moreover, Bulgarian authorities have never had a frank approach in trying to close the open issues that have burdened our bilateral relations for decades.

-Ultra Bulgarian nationalist Kressimir Karakachanov, Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and also the Defence Minister, denies the existence of a Macedonian identity.

Otherwise they would have explicitly recognized the Macedonian national identity and accepted the obligation to implement the verdicts of the European Court of Human Rights and to register OMO Ilinden-Pirin [ethnic Macedonian political party in Bulgaria]. But they continue to consciously deny that in the Pirin part, unjustly taken away with the 1913 Treaty of Bucharest, there are Macedonians who speak Macedonian.

Unfortunately, the current Government in Macedonia, by signing and ratifying such an agreement on good neighbourly relations with Bulgaria, conceded disproportionately and took on obligations with which it shot itself directly in the foot, causing great damage to the Macedonian identity. The obligation to re-write and revise history textbooks in Macedonia is a disaster.

We cannot fabricate history and lie that Bulgaria was not on the right side of the anti-fascist struggle during the Second World War. Just as we could never accept that Goce Delchev and Dame Gruev are Bulgarians, and that Ilinden is a Bulgarian holiday, as claimed by Bulgarian nationalists and radicals. Due to some of the unfortunately accepted provisions in the Agreement, in the future when we react to someone in Skopje trying to make a memorial service for Mara Buneva [controversial historical figure claimed to be Bulgarian], the Bulgarian Government will consider the Good Neighborly Agreement violated.

What is further worrying is that the provocations from the Bulgarian side have been going on non-stop. Their great nationalistic and assimilationist policy of denying the Macedonian national identity resulted in the Bulgarian MEPs Andrey Kovachev and Angel Djambazki pressuring the European Parliament, which made a cowardly resolution of acknowledging that in the Albanian regions of Prespa, Golo Brdo and Gora, where only Macedonians are live, also live non-existent Bulgarians. This is like claiming that the planet Mars has a Bulgarian colony. My position is clear, the Macedonian Alliance will fight with all political means for Macedonia to unilaterally terminate the Agreement, referring to its Article 13, item 3. - more on the Bulgarian-Macedonian Agreement at this link here

- Statue of Xhem Hasa, a leader of the Nazi Albanian quisling militia known as the Balli Kombetar during World War II. Location: Simnica, near the town of Gostivar, Macedonia.

Question 3: Albanian neo facism in Macedonia is on the rise. A number of World War II Albanian Nazi collaborator statues of the Balli Kombetar (Albanian Nazi quisling militia involved in ethnic cleansing of Macedonians and the the Holocaust) have been built by the Albanian political bloc, including DUI party led by Ali Ahmeti, in Macedonia. In Germany the birthplace of Nazism there are no Nazi statues. Will you be raising the issue of Albanian Nazi statues in Macedonia with US foreign policy makers as well as US politicians?

Ordinary Albanian citizens are increasingly waking up. They are becoming aware that the same political structure of Albanians that has been in power for 15 years and is a partner of both SDSM and VMRO DPMNE [ethnic Macedonian parties] abuses them to make money off of them. What both the Albanians and the Macedonians value most is economic prosperity, living standards and safe future for their children. Look at just how many Albanians are emigrating and pursuing happiness in European countries or in the United States. They simply disagree with the nationalism and blackmail of their politicians in Macedonia.

The monuments that DUI [Albanian nationalist party formed by ex KLA terrorists] insisted on, unfortunately, are part of the political bargaining that Macedonian politicians often do with Ali Ahmeti [DUI leader] only for the purpose of retaining their government powers and privileges. So it was with the embarrassing amnesty of the Hague cases, due to which instead of being held accountable for his participation in the UCK[KLA] and the massacre of the Macedonian soldiers in Vejce in 2001 [ethnic Albanian uprising / war in Macedonia], 17 years later, Talat Xhaferi is illegitimately performing the function of Speaker of the Macedonian Parliament. Such is the situation now, where in order to attain that damned power, an unconstitutional law for implementing bilingualism in Macedonia has been voted, which completely negates the spirit of the Ohrid Framework Agreement. I am using my contacts in the US Administration to lobby for the Macedonian national interests. I insist, in the shortest possible time, to conduct a census in the country, which will be conducted by the State Census Commission, headed by a person proposed by the Macedonian Diaspora and one that had not taken part in the previous shameful bargaining to the detriment of the Macedonian people and their future. We must once again be counted. Until then all requests of Albanian political radicals should be placed under a moratorium. - more on Albanian Nazi statues in Macedonia at this link here

-Martin Luther King

Question 4: The United States during the 1950s and 1960s bravely confronted racial discrimination through the civil rights movements led by the late Dr Martin Luther King. As a proud and patriotic American citizen of native ethnic Macedonian ancestry and the recipient of the prestigious Ellis Island Medal of Honor are you aghast, horrified at observing the extremist behaviour of some prominent Serbs in Macedonia including the country’s Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska, “activist” turned MP Pavle Bogoevski, leading media pundit Borjan Jovanovski, Skopje city suburban Mayor Sasa Bogdanovic-Srpce and some others who paradoxically refuse to protest against Serb nationalism but deliberately pick on and ferociously attack native ethnic Macedonians, Macedonian statues and Macedonian identity?

- Radmila Sekerinska attacking a native ethnic Macedonian statue in the Macedonian capital, Skopje.

George Atanasoski: Macedonia, throughout history, has always been the target of various radical structures in neighbouring countries that have tried to deny the existence of the Macedonian people and country. We must not forget that the Serbian Orthodox Church persistently denies the right to autocephaly of the Macedonian Orthodox Church and this has been the position for decades. It was not by chance that there was an attempt by [rebel ultra Serb nationalist Bishop] Jovan Vranishkovski’s schismatic church of the Orthodox Ohrid Archbishopric to mislead the Macedonian believers. But this attempt was thwarted because of the wisdom of the Macedonian people. In Serbia, especially some of the members of their former security services are trying to control Macedonian politics in various ways, thinking that this is their inheritance from Yugoslav times. It is a fact that there are Serbian installations in Macedonia. They have a personal interest in destabilising the country by directly working for a greater power that is striving to achieve strategic and geopolitical goals in the Balkans.

As for the specific politicians in Macedonia that you have mentioned, I do not want to comment in this regard, because I do not have any confirmed information that they represent Serbian interests. However, with regard to the fact that they have entered a very dangerous scenario of removing monuments from Macedonian history, renouncing our civilisational right to historically refer to the Ancient past - this current ruling structure will carry the cross of trying to obliterate the identity of the Macedonian people. - more on this theme at this link here

-Pavle Bogoevski, Colour Revolution leader and now Macedonian MP reveals he doesn’t protest against Serbian nationalism or links to corruption between Serb and Macedonian politicians.

Question 5: As a man of science who runs a successful hi-tech company in the United States, would you put a strong emphasis on science and technology, innovation, research and development in the Macedonian education system?

George Atanasoski: The Macedonian people are wise, smart and extremely skilled. It is not a small number of Macedonians who run successful businesses in Europe or the United States, Canada, Australia, or are professors at prestigious world universities. I never did forget the homeland and my native city of Prilep. I am seriously investing in Macedonia and in the media business, as well as in the food industry and hotel industry. I gave my sons the love for their native land. They are often in Macedonia and at certain times live in the country of their ancestors, knowing full-well the Macedonian tradition. My youngest even completed a part of his education in Macedonia, and speaks perfect Macedonian, regardless of being born in Florida. Some time ago, my brother Josif (Joseph) and I wanted to open a Microflex plant in the free economic zone in Prilep, but because of the cancer of Macedonian society - corruption, we did not realize that project. My life and professional motto is constant progress and exchange of knowledge. The program of the Macedonian Alliance envisages a series of measures, steps and policies for improving the Macedonian education system and increasing the quality and competitiveness of our workforce. I am deeply convinced that Macedonia has the capacity to be the most successful country in the region. It is only that the right people need to come into the right places.

SEKERINSKA’S “RACIAL DISCRIMINATION?” - top experts says no - but fires broadside at Macedonia’s PM Zaev

Macedonia’s Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska, who is of Serb background, is not in breach of a United Nations convention on racial discrimination for her attacks on indigenous ethnic Macedonian identity, according to a leading Balkan jurist.

Professor Igor Janev, a leading Macedonian academic who teaches at the Institute of Political Studies in Belgrade, Serbia, was asked whether Sekerinska had contravened the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD), a UN convention introduced in 1965 and which Macedonia is a signatory to.

“I don’t believe the above mentioned Convention is being directly violated, however there are indisputable articles contained in it,” he said.

Article 1 of CERD defines “racial discrimination" as:

“...any distinction, exclusion, restriction or preference based on race, colour, descent, or national or ethnic origin which has the purpose or effect of nullifying or impairing the recognition, enjoyment or exercise, on an equal footing, of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the political, economic, social, cultural or any other field of public life."

Serbia imposed brutal colonial rule in what is now the Republic of Macedonia between 1912-41, forcibly trying to Serbianise Macedonians. Serbian cultural hegemony still remains a touchy subject in Macedonia, even more taboo than gay, lesbian and transgender issues. Some Macedonians still confuse Serbian cultural hegemony with “anti nationalism” not realising that attacking indigenous ethnic Macedonian identity is a form of racism, and a relic of Serbian colonial rule.

Professor Janev, who is a well known opponent of Macedonia being forced to change its name due to Greek demands, has instead fired a broadside at Macedonia’s Prime Minister Zaev and his government’s willingness to give into Greek pressure:

“Zaev and representatives of his government have directly violated the Constitution of Macedonia and are manipulating the will of the people. They are especially exposing the country to international shame and ridicule by not respecting the dignity of the Republic of Macedonia. With their behaviour they are assisting another country to flagrantly interfere in the internal affairs of Macedonia. In doing so they call into question the sovereignty and statehood of the Republic of Macedonia.”

A leading legal expert, who asked not be named, based in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, says he holds a different view to Professor Janev over Sekerinska.

“Someone of Serb background who attacks Macedonian identity or a Macedonian statue or wants to change Macedonia’s name is being chauvinistic and contravenes CERD,” he said. “but bringing a charge under a UN convention is a bit wishy washy. It’s neither here nor there. The best recourse for the average citizen (gragjanin) is to make a complaint via Macedonia’s existing laws on ethnic hatred and seeking an indictment (krivicna prijava) from Macedonia’s Interior Ministry which controls the police and justice system.”

He said this was unlikely because of political pressure; Sekerinska being a key player in the present Macedonian government and heavily backed by the US.

In 2010 during a heated and emotional debate between Sekerinska and Serbian nationalist politician Ivan Stoiljkovic, a Macedonian MP, Stoijlkovic accused Sekerinska of being anti Serb. In reaction to the accusation, Sekerinska, a social democrat who publicly criticises nationalism, deliberately played the Serb nationalist card on Stoijlkovic by emphasising her Serb background and gave a pledge not to harm the interests of the local Serb community.

In over 20 years of political life she has never held a protest against Serbian nationalism outside the Serbian Embassy in Skopje, not even when the US Embassy in Macedonia was set a light in 1999 by Serb extremists linked to the Milosevic regime.

In protests dubbed the Colour Revolution two years ago, Sekerinska was photographed hurling an object at a Macedonian statue in the capital.

Other prominent Serbs who have been active in attacking so called Macedonian nationalism are pundit Borjan Jovanovski and Colour Revolution leader Pavle Bogoevski. Both have also refused to protest against Serb nationalism leaving them open to charges of bias, racism against native ethnic Macedonians. Even the US Embassy in Macedonia has not denied the charges levelled against them. - see link here

Pavle Bogoevski’s interesting admission - he doesn’t protest against Serb nationalism

In South Africa a white politician Helen Zille was accused of racism for making disparaging remarks about native black Africans. see link here

Burmese / Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi managed to fool the West for decades over her human rights activism even winning a Nobel Peace Prize in the process before being unmasked as a chauvinist against the Rohingya people.

Neo fascist Greek political party Golden Dawn was condemned for vandalising a Jewish monument in Salonica during large scale protests against the Republic of Macedonia this year.

TEAM UZUNOV has contacted Ms Sekerinska for comment  on numerous occasions but has not received any response likewise Pavle Bogeoevski.

Borjan Jovanovski has told TEAM UZUNOV that he refuses to protest against Serb nationalism outside the Serb Embassy in Macedonia. see link here and here and here

CIA CAN’T  CONFIRM OR DENY FILE ON YUGOSLAVIST WRITER - cites US Presidential Obama Executive Order

by Sasha Uzunov
Melbourne, Australia

The United States’s Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has blocked a Freedom of Information request for any file it might hold on a prominent Yugoslavist writer and founder of Macedonia’s Helsinki Watch Committee, the late Meto Jovanovski.

Team Uzunov Blog was involved in a legal tussle - lasting almost a year tear - with the CIA over a Freedom of Information request and 1 lost an appeal in May 2017 to gain access to any files, should they exist.

The CIA cited an Executive Order numbered 13526 signed by US President Barak Obama as one of the legal justifications in neither confirming nor denying the existence of any files on the late Yugoslavist writer from Macedonia, Meto Jovanovski, who passed away in December 2016.

TEAM UZUNOV blog lodged an appeal against the CIA rejection of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.

A Balkan Insight news website journalist in Macedonia has called for a controversial monument to a hard core 1930s Serb colonial Mayor/architect Josif Mihailovic of Skopje, now the capital of the Republic of Macedonia, to be built in the centre of that city in the place of Alexander the Great.

Mr Goce Trpkovski, who writes for a number of publications including Balkan Insight, has posted on social media a call for a monument to Mihailovic. (related story at this link )

Mihailovic was an architect and loyal monarchist handpicked by the then Serb King Alexander I in 1929 to become Mayor and Chief Architect of Skopje, the major city of Macedonia then under brutal Serbian colonial rule (lasting from 1912 to 1941).

The Macedonian language and identity were banned under Serbian colonial rule and a policy of forced Serbianisation was in place.

A 1941 British Foreign Office report on “colonialism” in what it's now the Republic of Macedonia -

His Majesty's British Minister to Belgrade, R.I. Campbell writing to Lord Halifax, Her Majesty's British Foreign Secretary, in 1941:

"Since the occupation by Serbia in 1913 of the Macedonian districts, the Government has carried out in this area, with greater or lesser severity, a policy of suppression and assimilation. In the years  following the Great War land was taken away from the inhabitants and given to Serbian colonists. Macedonians were compelled to change their names and the Government did little or nothing to assist the economic development of the country…"

Citation: British Foreign Office document - FO371/29785, Campbell (Belgrade) to Halifax, 6 January 1941.
The purpose of building up Skopje in the 1930s would have been to attract Serb colonialists to Macedonia and to turn Skopje, referred to as Skoplje in Serbian, into a Serbian city.

Mihailovic was Mayor of Skopje (1929-36 and 1939-41) during a brutal crackdown on Macedonians seeking independence from Serbian rule. He was immensely loyal to King Alexander I, later assassinated in France in 1934. (pictured below).

Mihailovic does have a street named after him in present day Skopje despite his past controversial role in a colonial regime which brutally repressed Macedonians.

A 1926 British Foreign Office report on Macedonia -

British Diplomat RA Gallop:

"The most striking thing to one familiar with North Serbia [Serbia proper], who has been accustomed to hear Macedonia described as Southern Serbia and its inhabitants as Serbs, was the complete difference of atmosphere which was noticeable almost as soon as we had crossed the pre-1913 frontier some miles south of Vranje. One felt as though one had entered a foreign country. Officials and officers from North Serbia seemed to feel this too, and I noticed especially in the cafes and hotels of Skopje that they formed groups by themselves and mixed little with the Macedo-Slavs. Those of the latter that I met were equally insistent on calling themselves neither Serbs nor Bulgars, but Macedonians.... There seemed to be no love lost for the Bulgars in most places. Their brutality during the war had lost them the affection even of those who before the Balkan War had been their friends."

-This 1930 newspaper article reports on the harshness of Serbian rule towards Macedonians and Croats. link here

Macedonia had been one territory under Ottoman Turkish Imperial rule for close to 500 years when it was partitioned by Serbia, Greece and Bulgaria in 1912-13 during the Balkan Wars which saw the Turks expelled from Macedonia. The new occupiers of Macedonia began their own brutal colonisation.

The part under Serbian rule was occupied by fascist Bulgaria in 1941 until 1944 during World War II. A native Macedonian partisan resistance movement sprung up consisting of an unofficial alliance of Macedonian communists aligned with Marshal Tito and Macedonian non-communists led by Metodija Andonov Cento. Macedonia was elevated to republican status in Tito’s Yugoslavia but a ruthless clampdown on former non communist wartime allies followed in 1946 with the imprisonment of Cento on trumped up charges during an infamous show trial.

1933 article in the American press - Mihailovich’s loyalty to his Serbian King Alexander. He had been dissuaded from leaving his post - leaving not so much over the concerns for the welfare and human rights of the local native ethnic Macedonian population but more out of fatigue at the amount of work he put in into turning Skopje into a Serbian colonial outpost.

CIA Archives - US Presidential memorandum

1944-45:- Macedonians don’t want return of Serbian King nor colonialism.

US Presidential memorandum - World War II - Stalin urges Macedonia receive representation in post war Yugoslavia:

"You have not the territory of Russia nor the people of Russia. You are a small country of small landowners in the heart of Europe. You will have to build your state upon democratic principles with equal representation for all the national groups of Yugoslavia. You will have to seek economic assistance from America the way we here in Russia are planning to do after the war is over.' Stalin, according to Subasic, spoke in ‘very warm terms about the United States.

“Discussing the monarchy, Stalin wanted to know from Subasic what the people’s feelings are about [Serb] King Peter, II. [ex Yugoslav royalist politican Ivan] Subasic confided in me for the first time that the King is not popular in Croatia, Macedonia and Slovenia but that he has some following, of course, in Serbia, and that he told this to Stalin...” link here

In September 1991 Macedonia declared independence from Yugoslavia but has had Greece as a constant thorn in its side; Greece and Bulgaria refuses to recognise the existence of Macedonians.

Macedonians in Greece and Bulgaria have fared worse than their ethnic kin in the Republic of Macedonia, which now faces an existential threat to its very existence over its name and identity - which are being used as blackmail by Greece and Bulgaria in order for Macedonia to join the European Union and NATO, of which Greece and Bulgaria are both members of.

AUSTRALIA’S AMBASSADOR: worrying trend Albanian Nazi statues in Macedonia

by Sasha Uzunov

Australia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Macedonia, Ms Julia Feeney, said there are “worrying trends” about the rise of neo fascism in Europe in response to Australian-Macedonian concerns over Albanian Nazi collaborator statues that have popped up in Macedonia in recent times.

“We are concerned about the rise of new fascism and extremism wherever it occurs and agree there are some worrying trends in Europe at this time,” she told TEAM UZUNOV blog.

A TEAM UZUNOV blog investigation (see links here and here) has uncovered two statues “honouring” World War II Nazi collaborators built by Macedonia’s ethnic Albanian political bloc - the first in 2006 and the second in 2015. So far the Germany Deputy Ambassador Marco Aquatacci and the Council of Europe, the continent’s peak human rights watch dog, have reacted to concerns - put by TEAM UZUNOV blog - over these statues but there has been silence, so far, from the Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister Mr Bujar Osmani, from ethnic Albanian nationalist party DUI - a coalition partner of Prime Minister Mr Zoran Zaev’s government - the US Ambassador to Macedonia Mr Jess Baily, and NATO Secretary General Mr Jens Stoltenberg amongst others.

A kind of unofficial media and political blackout has been imposed over the issue in Macedonia - believed to be due to the Albanian political bloc in Macedonia being staunchly pro American and a close ally of Washington. Raising such an issue over the statues would no doubt paint the US in a negative light. - (see links here and here )

The controversial Albanian “Nazi collaborator statues” in the Republic of Macedonia. Top: Xhem Hasa in the village of Simnica, near the town of Gostivar. Bottom: Aqif Krosi Recani in the village of Recan, near Gostivar. Both figures were leaders of the Albanian nationalist militia Balli Kombetar in western Macedonia during World War II. The Balli Kombetar collaborated with Nazi Germany in conducting of ethnic cleansing of native ethnic Macedonians as well as murdering Albanians opposed to fascism. According to US author Richard Raschke, the Balli Kombetar’s overall leader Midhat Fraseri was actively involved in the Holocaust against the Jewish people.

Macedonian identity has come under ferocious attack from all quarters under the banner of “anti nationalism” and “anti corruption” - neighbouring Greece, Bulgaria as well the Albanian political bloc in Macedonia and some leading Serb commentators and politicians in Macedonia, including the country’s Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska. - (see link here)

Many native ethnic Macedonians sees this as a poorly disguised attempt to erase their identity and name and are angered at this targeting since they have been victims of Greek, Serb and Bulgar colonialism beginning in 1912-13 with the partition of their traditional homeland. The part under Serbian colonial rule became a republic - de facto Macedonian nation state - in Tito’s federal Yugoslavia after World War II.

Macedonia, since gaining independence in 1991 from Yugoslavia, has been pressured by Greece to change its name in order to gain European Union and NATO membership. Greece and Bulgaria, both EU and NATO members, deny the existence of a Macedonian nationality or a Macedonian minority living within their borders. They have exacted a huge price in demands in order to allow Macedonia to gain membership to both the EU and NATO. - (see links here and here)

In 2001 the Kosovo Liberation Army invaded Macedonia in an attempt to take territory and create a Greater Albania but it was foiled by the country’s security forces - police and army - after being initially on the back foot.

Ambassador Feeney said she would watch closely the situation in Macedonia:

"I can assure you that Australian Embassy has, and will continue to, monitor political developments in-country. As we embrace diversity in Australia, here too we consider all Macedonian citizens equally, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.  Australia continues to support the advancement of peace, democratic freedom and tolerance in the Western Balkans region.”

Australia has an Embassy to Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia in Belgrade, the Serb capital, despite there being more Macedonians than Serbs in Australia. Australia because of strong Greek lobbying recognises Macedonia under the term “Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia” whilst the US, Canada and over 120 odd countries recognise it under its constitutional name of Republic of Macedonia. (see link here)

Australian Macedonians will be holding nation wide rallies in the major cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Perth - on Sunday 4 March in support of Macedonia’s name and identity.

Jewish Holocaust Centre, Skopje, Macedonia.

2011 - A museum dedicated to the memory of the Jews of Macedonia who perished in the Shoah has been inaugurated in the former Yugoslav republic, in the presence of the country’s president and representatives of international Jewish organisations, including the World Jewish Congress (WJC).

In his speech, the WJC’s Research Director Laurence Weinbaum pointed out that no Jewish community in Europe had suffered a greater degree of destruction than the Macedonian one.

Referring to Macedonia's principled stand on the restitution issue and to its unwavering friendship with Jews and Israel, he said:

"In much of contemporary Europe, dead Jews are respected, but live ones are defamed. You honor the dead and the living, and in so doing you have set an example to which other nations should aspire. There are nations that are larger, richer, better known and more powerful than Macedonia, but none more decent, gracious, good-hearted and noble.” see link here

The Strange case of Dr BUJAR & Mr OSMANI - two faces of Bujar Osmani

There are not many Prime Ministers or deputy Prime Ministers who belong to political parties that build Nazi collaborator statues.

German Prime Minister (Federal Chancellor) Angela Merkel and her deputy don't. But Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister Bujar Osmani has that dubious "honour" - and he cynically pretended to commemorate the Holocaust a few weeks ago.

Albanian Nazi quisling militia Balli Kombetar took part in the Holocaust during WW2, according to US author Richard Raschke.

Yet there is silence over Balli Kombetar statues in Macedonia recently built by ethnic Albanian party DUI (BDI) whose members include Ali Ahmeti, Nevzat Bejta, Artan Grubi and Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister Bujar Osmani.

Osmani, a medical doctor by profession, has come across as well groomed, well spoken and a highly intelligent political operator for western audiences but beneath the exterior is a man whose political party DUI has neo fascist views. see links here and here

He has never publicly distanced himself from those views held by his DUI colleagues nor spoken out over the Balli Kombetar statues built in the past decade.

Silence on this issue sends the wrong message to both the international community and native ethnic Macedonians in the Republic of Macedonia.

Author Richard Raschke on the Balli Kombetar’s role in World War II - link here

Both the Macedonian and international media have given Osmani and the Albanian political bloc a free ride over the Nazi collaborator statues, not once asking him or the Albanian bloc about them. This is mainly due to strong US support for the Albanian political bloc in Macedonia.

Sources within the Jewish community abroad and in Macedonia have told TEAM UZUNOV blog that there is a reluctance to speak out because of the very small size of the remaining Jewish community in Macedonia, largely wiped out during World War II at the hands of the Nazis and collaborationist Kingdom of Bulgaria, which had occupied Macedonia - what is now the Republic of Macedonia - from 1941 to 1944.

“We’re playing it cool for now and hoping that Albanian leaders in Macedonia will eventually remove these statues,” one source told TEAM UZUNOV.

Subject: World War II Albanian Nazi collaborator statues

Dear Mr Osmani,

My name is Sasha Uzunov, an Australian journalist who was recently in Macedonia. I have worked in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am also a former Australian soldier.

I wanted to ask you some questions:

 1. The German Deputy Ambassador Mr Marco Acquaticci has responded to concerns over controversial World War II Albanian Nazi collaborator statues built in western Macedonia and supported by your political party, DUI. You have remained silent. Why is that?

2. Isn't it a contradiction to commemorate the Jewish Holocaust and to support statues to the Balli Kombetar, a Nazi quisling milita?

3. You have pushed for bi-lingualism in Macedonia but by keeping quiet and not opposing controversial Albanian statues why should native ethnic Macedonians trust your intentions behind bi-lingualism?

4. Are you aware that in 2007 the US Embassy in Macedonia opposed bi-lingualism in Macedonia? Link:

COUNCIL OF EUROPE - Macedonians concerned over extremism

by Sasha Uzunov

The Council of Europe, the continent’s top human rights body, has reacted to concerns from indigenous ethnic Macedonians from the Republic of Macedonia over what they say is a ferocious attack on their native identity and rising neo-Albanian fascism.

TEAM UZUNOV BLOG initially contacted Ms Dunja Mijatovic who is in the process of leaving her old position with the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) to assume the top job, Commissioner for Human Rights, Council of Europe (COE).

“The new Commissioner takes up office in April and, as the previous ones, she will continue to follow closely the situation of media freedom and extremism in all our member states,” said Mr Stefano Montanari, an official COE spokesman.

Concerns have been raised in the Republic of Macedonia over the rise of neo Albanian fascism over the past decade with the build of statues to controversial Albanian leaders who collaborated with Nazi Germany in western Macedonia during World War II. The Balli Kombetar, a Nazi German quisling militia which murdered Macedonians and Albanians opposed to fascism, was led by Xhem Hasa. A statue was built in to “honour” Hasa by the Albanian political bloc within the government coalition in 2006. That statue and a second more recent one to another Balli Kombetar commander are both situated near the town of Gostivar, in western Macedonia.

The Balli Kombetar under Italian Fascist and later Nazi German patronage established a short-lived “Greater Albania” which sought to ethnically cleanse native Macedonians from western Macedonia. It is an extremist ideology that is widely supported by current day ethnic Albanian leaders in Macedonia such as Ali Ahmeti of the DUI party, who in 2001, started a war in Macedonia but was “pardoned” after strong arm twisting from the US in the background.

Macedonia has a Holocaust Museum in Skopje, the capital city, dedicated to the Jewish victims deported to Nazi death camps by Nazi Germany’s then ally, the Kingdom of Bulgaria, which in 1941 had occupied what is now the Republic of Macedonia. It also has numerous other monuments which specifically highlight the resistance to fascists like the Balli Kombetar.

And yet, a deliberate silence has fallen over the Albanian Nazi statues in Macedonia. In other parts of Europe, such as Austria, there has been quick condemnation of any neo Nazi activity. The Deputy German Ambassador to Macedonia commented on the Balli Kombetar statues, while the US Ambassador Mr. Jess Baily has declined, as have a number of organisations. link here

The Albanian political bloc is seen as staunchly pro-US and there has been a reluctance to openly discuss any controversial statues that put them in a negative light.
Indigenous ethnic Macedonians also have been alarmed by the ferocious attack on their native identity by some prominent Serbs in Macedonia’s media and political circles. Journalist and “human rights activist” Borjan Jovanovski (pictured left), Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska, Skopje-area suburban Mayor Sasa Bogdanovic, the so-called “Colour Revolutionary” Pavle Bogoevski, and a host of others. They regularly attack Macedonian patriotism under the banner of “anti-nationalism” - but it is an “anti-nationalism” which ignores the Albanian Nazi statues or incidents of Serb nationalism over the past three decades, including the 1999 attack on the US Embassy in Macedonia by Serb extremists.

UPDATE: Good Serb, Bad Serb routine !

The “bad guys” template is collage of Russians and Serbs who are Interchangeable and the “good guys” are the Serbs who are pro NATO in Macedonia even though they might actually share some of the views of the former group. It’s really nasty ethnic baiting from the West - which aims to create confusion and hatred.

News website Balkan Insight’s hilarious and contradictory “Good Serb, Bad Serb” routine in Macedonia !

Controversial Russian “philosopher” Alexander Dugin was in town recently, Skopje, the Macedonian capital to offer his thoughts to a new pro Russian party called Edinstvena Makedonija (United Macedonia). see link here . He stands accused of whipping up anti West sentiment in Macedonia.

The story outlines Dugin’s Pan Slavist views and his calls for close ties between Russia, Serbia and Macedonia as well as his controversial links to Serbian monarchist groups. The reporter of the Dugin story, Goce Trpkovski, bizarrely and paradoxically on social media calls for a statue to be built to a controversial Serbian Colonial Mayor of Skopje and architect, Joseph Mihailovich. see link here

BALKAN INSIGHT’S OWN SERB MONARCHIST FAN? Reporter Sinisa Jakov Marusic. - see link here
Russian President Vladimir Putin’s court philosopher Dugin is the “Bad Serb” in this scenario but the “Good Serb” - though not mentioned in the story is Borjan Jovanovski (pictured above) who shares some of the same views of Dugin such as the Tsarist Russian inspired Pan Slavism but he goes “one better” than Dugin in terms of “Slav union”- at one stage calling for Macedonia to return to defacto Serb Yugoslavist federal rule. A move that would probably spark civil war in Macedonia. see link here and here

Jovanovski and his supporters have stubbornly refused to protest against “Serb-Russian interference” in Macedonia outside the Serb Embassy. This is strange. see link here  The only “protests” are tweets on social media - that’s the extent.

But you have to ask why are some who hold Serb chauvinist views in Macedonia but who have cleverly hidden behind the pretext of so called “anti nationalism” never called to account? It might have to do with supporting NATO and US foreign policy. The US Embassy in Macedonia doesn’t deny the chauvinistic views of its supporters such as Jovanovski. see link here

If anything the unrestrained chauvinistic behaviour of Borjan Jovanovski, Sasa Bogdanovic-Srpce etc towards ethnic Macedonians has created enormous anti west sentiment in #macedonia. You don’t need a so called “Russian philosopher” Dugin to light the fuse on that... you can thank US Ambassador Jess Baily & co for that ! see links here and here

Macedonian governing party SDSM’s Bogdanovic, the Mayor of the Skopje municipality of Centre (Opstina Centar) even invokes Serb nationalist hero Gavrilo Princip with relish, cleverly inferring or implying that “Gabriel Principle” (a pun or word play on Gavrilo Princip) is needed in Macedonia. Princip is known in history as the assassin of Austrian Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 which triggered World War I. see link here

There seems to be a deliberate schizophrenic policy here....to confuse and polarise Macedonians and create hatred between Macedonians, Serbs, Russians, Albanians and so on.

THE SOROS CLICHE - racist stereotype of Macedonians retweaked?

The Soros cliche used is an old idea re-tweaked many times- it revolves around mislabelling any kind of independent Macedonian behaviour as “nationalist” or “extreme” or lumping Macedonians in with Serbs and Montenegrins in an “evil Slav” template against Albanians.

It is in fact a racist stereotype of Macedonians, which enlightened people including Serb, Greek intellectuals and westerners in general don’t accept these stereotypes.

Ironically, this is a legacy of Serbian colonial rule in (Vardarska) Macedonia (1912-41). This concept was heavily modified and used in Tito’s Yugoslavia where people who didn’t toe the Communist party line were attacked as “nationalist” regardless if they were or were not.

It is puzzling me why young Macedonians who work for these NGOs are not aware of the racist origins of the mislabelling technique. Didn’t they ever teach them post Balkan Wars & pre World World II history about all three parts of Macedonia in schools in SR Macedonia and later in Republic of  Macedonia? (1912-41).

Likewise with Greek colonialism in Macedonia but with a slight difference - Macedonian “nationalists” are “communist inventions” of Tito and Stalin in 1944.

Bulgarian nationalists uses the Greek template - Macedonia is a “communist invention” and Macedonians are nothing more wayward “West Bulgars”.... etc etc.

This mislabelling technique is a deliberate strategy in order to paint ordinary Macedonians standing up for themselves as “extremists” and thereby satisfying Greek, Bulgar and Albanian nationalist demands and to a lesser extent some Serb extremists.

Original Questions emailed to Ms Dunja Mijatovic:

You are an expert on human rights and media freedoms. I wanted to draw your attention to matters in Macedonia. A number of prominent Serbs in Macedonia - journalist & “human rights activist” Borjan Jovanovski, Defence Minister Radmila Sekerinska, Skopje city suburban Mayor Sasa Bogdanovic, Colour Revolutionary Pavle Bogoevski, and a host of others have attacked native ethnic Macedonian identity as well as Macedonian statues but have paradoxically never protested against Serb nationalism or “interference” in Macedonia.

This has raised concerns amongst Macedonians of deliberate chauvinism, favouritism, prejudice by the above named individuals who are alleged to be hiding their true motives behind “anti nationalism.”

Mr Jovanovski stubbornly and angrily refuses to protest outside the Serb embassy in Skopje, Macedonia.

link: http://teamuzunovmedia.blogspot.com.au/2017/06/macedonia-serb-spy-saga-is-there-more.html?m=1

Mr Bogoevski, has admitted, that he too, doesn’t protest against Serb nationalism.

link: http://reporter.mk/nashi-faci/bogoevski-do-dachik-daj-mi-eden-dokaz-de/

Mr Bogdanovic has invoked Serb nationalist icon Gavrilo Princip and has threatened to demolish Macedonian monuments in Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia.

Question 1: In the past you have been very quick to jump to Serb journalist Mr Borjan Jovanovski’s defence when he has alleged that he has received death threats from angry native ethnic Macedonians. Ms Mijatovic, in your new role with the COE, can you give a public undertaking to monitor closely and fairly events in Macedonia and give an assurance to native ethnic Macedonians in the Republic of Macedonia that they will be given equal treatment?

Question 2: Are you concerned with the rise of neo Albanian fascism and extremism in Macedonia? Albanian politicians have over the past decade or so built a number of controversial statues to Albanian World War II Nazi collaborators in Macedonia. The issue has been brought to the attention of the German Deputy Ambassador to Macedonia, Mr Marco Acquatacci, who has given a statement.
